Thermal Properties of Aggregates

The chapter on Thermal Properties of concrete aggregates authored by H. K. Cook appeared in the three previous editions of Significance of Tests and Properties of Concrete and Concrete Aggregates, ASTM STP 169 in 1956, ASTM STP 169A in 1966, and ASTM STP 169B in 1978. Since much of the discussion in the previous editions remains appropriate, the current edition is a revision of the previous work rather than a rewrite. This revision presents typical values of thermal properties for various common rocks and minerals and describes a means for calculating such values from existing data sources. A revised method for determining the coefficient of thermal expansion and the extent of anisotropy of rocks is referenced as well as a new method for measuring conductivity using a conventional needle probe.
