Side Friction in Consolidation Tests on Fibrous Peat

Source

Consolidation tests have been conducted on a fibrous peat using a 254-mm-diameter hydraulic oedometer which was modified to accommodate force and pressure transducers. These transducers were used to evaluate the side friction acting on the peat and to record the distribution of applied pressure across the width of a specimen. The peat specimens were subjected to consolidation pressure in the range of 20 to 120 kN/m2. Significant side friction was recorded (up to 50% of the applied pressure) even when the insides of the oedometer were smeared with grease.
