Attenuation of Chlorocarbon Compounds by Clay Liner Materials of a Waste Disposal Facility

Leachates generated from organic wastes in a disposal facility may have the potential to permeate the clay liner. The assessment of the potential migration of organic compounds from the disposal facility included investigating the adsorption of the organic fraction in natural waste leachates on clay liner materials, Distribution ratios (Kr) for four volatile compounds, four nonvolatile compounds, and two insecticides were determined in accordance with the proposed ASTM short-term batch method for the determination of distribution ratios. The pH of the leachates and types of clay specimens were found to have no significant effect on the magnitude of adsorption of the ten chlorocarbon compounds by the clays. However, the distribution ratios of some compounds did display limited concentration dependence. The distribution ratios were then normalized to the organic carbon content of each clay specimen and expressed as Koc values. The Koc values were related to each compound's water solubility and octanol/water partition coefficients by linear regression. The correlation coefficients indicated that both the water solubility and octanol/water partition coefficients of the organic compounds accounted for about 90% of the variation in the experimental Koc values. This suggests that the primary mode of interaction between the clay liner material and chlorocarbon compounds is hydrophobic in nature, and that most of the removal of the chlorocarbon compounds from solution was by adsorption onto the organic carbon fraction present in the clay liner materials.
