In photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) the signal response with respect to wavelength of incident radiation is detected as heat at the surface of the sample that results from nonradiative relaxation of the excited states produced on absorption by the molecular species in the sample. This process is complementary to radiative relaxation via luminescence, and study of photoacoustic signals can give information concerned with the quantum efficiency of luminescence processes. The manner in which absolute quantum efficiencies can be determined for both solid and liquid samples with simple instrumentation and without reference to luminescence standard materials is described.
