This study examined the slip resistance and ultimate strength of splices of tensile and flexural members for steel structures that were adhesively bonded and clamped with high-strength bolts. It was found that the adhesive fails and the splice slips into bearing when its shear strength is exceeded or when an adherent yields. Up to the slip load, a bonded and bolted splice transfers the load by shear in the bondline, with the bolts acting as a clamping device. Beyond the slip load, the splice can transfer the load only by shear in the bolts. The strengths of the adhesive and the bolts are not additive. Guidelines are recommended for the design of adhesively bonded and bolted joints.
