Effects of Liquids on the Stress-Rupture Lives of Fiber Glass-Reinforced Plastics

Source

The results of a preliminary investigation on the effect of liquid environments on the stress-rupture lives of fiber glass-reinforced plastics are investigated. Specimens made from sheet molding compounds were subjected to stresses while being immersed in water and in isooctane. At stresses greater than 50 percent of the ultimate tensile strength of the material, the stress rupture lives show a large amount of scatter. Immersion of the polymer in the liquids indicates considerable liquid absorption. Immersion of the specimens in water also decreases the amount of scatter. Microscopic observation reveals a multitude of irregularities of glass fiber protrusions at the surface of the specimens. The investigation is limited and serves as an indication for future research.
