Experimental Study of Compression-Compression Fatigue of Graphite/Epoxy Composites

Source

The objective of the study is to determine the static compression and R = 10 constant frequency compression-compression fatigue properties of Hercules AS/3501-6 tape graphite/epoxy composites. Environmental conditions selectively used are: (1) room temperature dry, (2) room temperature wet (1.1 percent by weight), (3) 103.3°C (218°F) dry, and (4) 103.3°C (218°F) wet (1.1 percent by weight). Ply orientations studied are [0]nt, [90]nt, [±45]ns, and [(±45)5/016/904]c. All fatigue testing is at room temperature with subsequent residual strength testing on survivors at 103.3°C (218°F). New test methods are developed. Degradation is observed in the 1.25 million cycle endurance limit stresses and the compressive residual strength values compared with static properties.
