A consistent and automated method of global crack closure measurement has been developed for the compact tension specimen. The technique uses the elastic compliance technique enabling both crack length and crack closure measurements to be automated with the aid of a digital computer data acquisition and control system. The procedure is limited to steady state fatigue crack growth rates above the near-threshold regime.
