    Abstract

    It has been very important to reduce the machining cost of optical materials in the laser fusion program. LHG-8 laser glass was ground with the ultra-precision surface grinder having a glass-ceramic spindle of zero-thermal expansion in order to remove or shorten the optical polishing process in manufacturing high power laser optics. The laser damage thresholds were measured at 1 ns and 30 ns in pulse width and 1.053 μm in wavelength on ground surfaces as well as optically-polished surfaces. 0.5 nm rms in surface roughness was measured on the ground surface with WYKO's TOPO-3D. The laser damage thresholds on the ground surface were very similar to that on the optically-polished one.
