Though numerous investigators have studied the effects of various impediments on manual performance, few if any standardized test procedures have been developed even for particular conditions such as protective glove wear, climatic extremes, or drug use. The use of different dexterity tests, minor modifications of the same tests, and changes in experimental design result in frequent duplication of very similar experimentation. Standardized test batteries would streamline future research in this area by decreasing redundancy and making it possible to compare results from parallel studies. In developing a standardized test battery, several factors must be considered: availability and durability of equipment, control of learning effects, ease of scoring and administration, ability to discriminate between conditions being tested, and reliability. These factors, which were addressed in an investigation of the effects of chemical defense gloves on manual performance for the U.S. Air Force, are discussed here.
