Development of a Standard Quality-Control Test Method for Determining the Fiber Strength of Graphitized Roving

Source

A standard quality-control test method for determining the fiber strength of graphitized roving has been developed. Methods analyzed were (1) single filament, (2) dry strand between joints, and (3) impregnated roving. The single-filament test is currently the only test routinely employed for determining the quality (ultimate strength) of roving. Therefore, it was used as a standard for the other test methods being evaluated. A comparison is made between the three test methods with respect to the ease and time required for specimen preparation and testing, along with the accuracy and ability to reproduce strength results. The conclusion deals with the practicality and feasibility of each test with respect to this projects goal, along with recommendations as to the “best” test method.
