Settlement and Engineering Considerations in Landfill and Final Cover Design

Source

Design of municipal landfills for closure is complicated by the large settlement that normally takes place for long periods of time after abandonment. This means that landfill slopes can change significantly with time, negating careful contouring and drainage provisions. It is possible to try and forecast this, but regulatory considerations (for landfills of specific depths especially) may hinder adequate design for full expected post-closure settlement. Preferred management techniques are outlined, and specific recommendations made for maintenance and settlement.
