This paper reports the results of surgical investigation of three types of hydroxyapatite implanted in ten adult Macaca fascicularis monkeys. The hydroxyapatite was placed in edentulous alveolar ridges of the animals. Three types of implants were evaluated—porous hydroxyapatite, nonporous granular hydroxyapatite, and xenografts of bovine bone. The results indicated that all three implants increased the thickness and height of the alveolar ridge. The anorganic xenogeneic bone was more effective in being replaced by host bone than either the porous or nonporous hydroxyapatite. Bony ingrowth into the hydroxyapatite in the porous implants was more extensive than bony growth around nonporous particles.
