Use of Rotary Continuous Cast Steel for Production of Tubes for Bearing Applications

Source

ASCOMETAL recently improved its steelmaking processes with the installation of new secondary metallurgy equipment (Ladle Furnace and RH degasser) and by the application of continuous casting to the production of bearing steels (AISI/SAE 52100). Such material, after rolling, is used by VALTI to produce seamless tubes for bearing producers. Thorough investigations were performed on such products including rolling contact fatigue tests. They showed that Rotary Continuous Cast (RCC) steels were at least equivalent to high-quality ingot materials, and that very high rolling contact fatigue properties can be achieved by proper and careful design of the overall process route, including continuous casting.
