A Component Modelling System to Aid Materials Selection in Engineering Design

Source

A highly interactive system is described for the modelling and analysis of simple engineering components. The system has been developed to provide flexible control over the component profile and to aid materials selection through close integration with materials selection software and a materials database. The system allows the designer to investigate the relationship between component geometry, loading, boundary conditions, other design parameters and suitable materials. The methodology behind the system flexibility is described and the software structure, which is based on object-oriented programming methods, is also outlined. A description of the user interface is included and the application of the system to materials selection for automotive components is discussed.
