Lime-Based Fixation of Flue Gas Desulfurization Wastes

Source

A major focus of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's 20-year-old campaign to control air pollution has been the reduction of harmful sulfur oxides emitted by coal-burning industrial plants, especially public utilities. This paper reviews the various forms of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) that have been used or are contemplated, addressing mainly the problem of disposal of the solid wastes generated by the FGD processes. It is concluded that lime-based fixation of FGD wastes incorporates both pozzolanic and sulfopozzolanic chemistry that will provide a landfill with minimum impact upon the environment.
