There exist significant gaps in our understanding of human health effects resulting from inhalation of low-level nitrogen dioxide. Controlled clinical studies provide an important approach for examining acute effects in potentially sensitive subgroups. Although the evidence is inconclusive in linking nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure with enhanced bronchoconstriction in asthmatics, a more consistent data base is emerging. As evaluation techniques improve, it is predicted that more significant changes in the range of 0.30 ppm NO2 will be found.
