Minimizing Waste Oil Disposal

Source

This paper identifies types of waste oils, options available for minimizing waste generation, process equipment needed to implement these options, regulatory restrictions on the management of waste oils, and management requirements of an effective waste oil minimization program. Options discussed include on-site recovery of waste oils, on-site use as fuel, off-site disposal through fuel blending, off-site recycling, and on-site techniques to minimize the volume of waste oils. The definitions of specification fuels, off-specification fuels, and hazardous waste fuels and the restrictions associated with these types of fuels are presented. Case studies for utilizing waste oils as a fuel and for recycling waste machine coolants are also presented.
