Determination of Fatigue-Crack Initiation and Propagation in a Magnesium Alloy

Source

Rotating-beam fatigue tests were carried out on AZ63A-T4 magnesium alloy to determine the initiation and propagation characteristics of a fatigue crack. An electrical-resistance method for measuring cracks nondestructively was developed and is described. No relationship was apparent between life before crack initiation and life after initiation. The fit of the data with Head's formula predicting crack length as a linear function of the number of stress cycles is discussed.
