Determination of Properties of Sand from Self-Boring Pressuremeter Tests

Source

The self-boring pressuremeter test is ideally suitable for determining in-situ engineering properties of sand. A new method for the determination of the friction angle is presented that accounts for the non-linear volume change behaviour of loose sands. The determination of shear modulus from small unloading-reloading cycles is discussed. A method is presented that allows the shear modulus values to be normalized with respect to stress level. A rational method is also presented to allow the ‘elastic’ shear modulus measured from small unloading-reloading cycles to be applied to engineering design problems where the loading may induce strains larger than the ‘elastic’ level.
