Facility performance can be measured in terms of costs, benefits of alternative locations, building systems, furnishings and interior design. The research presented in the Keynote focuses on one facet, namely, the assessment of employee's rating of environmental conditions within their offices and the actual and perceived effects on personal productivity and well-being. Research methods are just in their infancy and a Catholic approach needs to be taken in their application. They do have a place in assessing facility performance and the suitability of a facility to meet the functional requirements of occupants. Concern for effective use of organizational resources in conducting surveys is important. Future work linking productivity to facility performance will be very worthwhile.
