Static and Dynamic Properties of Marine Sediments: A State of the Art

Source

Exploitation of natural resources has resulted in increased interest in marine geotechnology. This paper briefly summarizes the characteristics of ocean basins, the nature of the sedimentary environment, types and distribution of marine sediments, consolidation behavior, static shear strength, and response under dynamic loading. It is concluded that there is no indication that physical characteristics of the shelf deposits or pelagic deposits (excluding calcareous and siliceous materials) are fundamentally different and unique compared to terrestrial soils. In addition, apparent overconsolidation in the upper layers of deep-sea deposits is observed to occur in all areas where erosion has not taken place.
