Development of “Standard Terminology of Appearance”

Source

In an ongoing effort between 1986 and 1991, the size of Committee E-12's terminology standard, ASTM Definitions of Terms Relating to Appearance of Materials (E 284), has been approximately doubled after some five years of inactivity. A major revision of the standard, with a change in title to ASTM Terminology of Appearance, was made in 1990. This paper describes the content of E 284 and the reasons for and nature of the recent changes to it. The changes include revision of the Introduction, addition of Scope and Significance and Use sections, adoption of spoken word order, addition of parts of speech and date of addition or latest revision (also appearing in appendixes), relocation of many delimiting phrases, and separation of Discussion from the definitions proper. Future plans for the standard are also discussed.
