Waterproofing Applications for Floodproofing and Resiliency

Source

Coastal, riverine, and local surface flooding can damage buildings and disrupt communities. Sea levels are rising, and climate change will likely accelerate this process, leading to increased flood risks in coastal areas. Storms that cause flooding problems are occurring with increasing severity and frequency, making both coastal and inland flooding more common. Many building owners are implementing floodproofing measures to help protect their structures from the increasing risks of flooding. This presentation will focus on applying waterproofing concepts and experience to make floodproofing more reliable and effective. This presentation will also discuss methods for evaluating the risk of surface water and flooding to individual sites and buildings. Understanding flood risk is important for facility owners because the cost of flood hazard mitigation for infrastructure can be substantial. We will also discuss the basic approaches for wet and dry floodproofing as well as Federal Emergency Management Agency Special Flood Hazard Areas (FEMA SFHAs) and building code requirements for SFHA zones. We will also discuss the forecasts for sea level rise and strategies for addressing sea level rise in building design and construction. We will describe how to identify the most vulnerable areas of buildings and how to protect them. We will present flood mitigation measures, such as floodwalls, temporary flood barriers, and flood shields, and how to use waterproofing to integrate these protections into new and existing buildings. Finally, we will review example projects and discuss the effectiveness of different floodproofing techniques.
