    Abstract

    Through the years, different values have been recommended as the maximum deflection for the design of cold-formed steel framing when used as a backing for brick veneer. The basis for each of these recommendations varied considerably and included criteria such as limiting the extent of cracking in the veneer, limiting the width of cracks in the veneer, limiting moisture intrusion, and “observations, experience, and judgment.” The methods by which this information was determined also varied and included analysis, full-scale testing, and field surveys. In addition, the building code-mandated wind load provisions that were frequently used to calculate maximum design deflection have changed over time. This paper reviews and reassesses the different maximum deflection recommendations by examining their basis and other factors. A comparison of the different maximum deflection recommendations is made considering the impact of the changing wind load provisions. Based on this information, a revised approach for determining maximum deflection for cold-formed steel framing used as a backing for brick veneer is recommended.
