    Abstract

    The dusting of seed coatings containing neonicotinoid insecticides has become an important issue because of the association between dust-off and bee colony die-off. Because of this concern, efforts are underway by seed coating formulators to reduce dust-off. To accelerate this effort, as well as to improve the flowability and plantability of seed coatings, it would be useful if seed coating formulators could apply the mechanical tests that paint formulators use to predict paint durability to the development of seed coating formulations. We have therefore performed tribological testing on seed coating films containing insecticide and fungicide suspension concentrate combinations and polymeric binders in an attempt to correlate film mechanical properties with Heubach dust-off testing, flowability performance, and plantability evaluations conducted on coated seeds.
