    Abstract

    Although continuous insulation (CI) has always been an integral component of exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS), the systems may be most well-known for features such as aesthetics and design flexibility. At least equally important, however, is thermal performance—the ease with which EIFS incorporate continuous insulation into the overall wall assembly as well as their ability to meet key performance needs and requirements for exterior wall claddings. The use of continuously insulated exterior wall claddings and systems is on the increase largely as a result of industry trends and new energy codes as well as regulatory requirements. Regardless of the type, adding or incorporating continuous insulation as part of the exterior wall claddings can result in a number of additional or, in some cases, new considerations and challenges in terms of design and construction because of the impact on the overall wall assembly in terms of code compliance, fire performance, drainage, detailing, cladding weight and attachment, changes in wall geometry, and so forth. This paper will review many of the design and construction considerations facing the construction team as a result of incorporating continuous insulation into exterior walls as well as how EIFS can satisfy these considerations and challenges.
