Deep raft foundations below a high groundwater table always have hydrostatic uplift pressure problems. Conventional solutions such as dead weight, tension pile, or anchors are costly, inefficient, and time-consuming. This paper presents a rational approach by using a geosynthetic system to control and relieve the hydrostatic uplift force within the impervious strata. Filtration, clogging, transmissivity, and other pertinent properties of geosynthetic materials are specified to assure the dissipation of uplift hydrostatic pressure in the long run. The design concept was applied in practice to a multi-story commercial complex. Based on the site experience, the installation of this system was found to be rapid, simple, and cost effective. The results of long-term (3 years) site monitoring made to date have shown good performance of this system.
