    In recent years, atomic absorption (AA) has been abandoned by some laboratories as the technique of choice for wear metal analysis in favor of other techniques. Although AA has been generally regarded as a good method for this type of analysis, economic considerations seem to have dictated this trend. Conventional AA analysis is too slow and tedious for multielement analyses. Laboratories need faster turnaround times and less labor intensive methods such as inductively coupled plasma (ICP) and spark emission, both of which are better suited to multielement analysis. A new sequential atomic absorption spectrophotometer, capable of rapid multielement analysis for up to 24 elements per sample in a single run, has been evaluated for oil analysis. The instrument is able to change hollow cathode lamps and other instrumental parameters automatically within 2 s, thus allowing 10 elements to be determined per minute. Unlike conventional AA, a sample is completely analyzed for all elements before the following sample is aspirated.
