In a typical new material development scenario, scaleup must occur prior to obtaining meaningful results with respect to compression. This is necessitated by the need to have enough material to manufacture the large quantities required for typical compression testing. A new test for compression testing of continuous, filamentary composites is proposed, developed, and implemented in this study. The results are compared to standard ASTM D 695 (end loaded, side supported specimens) analytically and experimentally. Both tests yield comparable means, but the tow compression test may offer advantages with respect to understanding the performance of the basic building block for filamentary composites (individual tows). The test requires less material and requires fewer steps for sample preparation compared to other unidirectional compression test configurations.
