Comparison of Acute and Short-Term Chronic Test Methods for Effluent Toxicity Monitoring at Sewage Treatment Facilities

The State of Connecticut has utilized a modified acute toxicity screening test for monitoring of whole effluent toxicity at all municipal sewage treatment facilities since 1988. This research presents a comprehensive comparison of this method with two commonly used short-term chronic test methods for monitoring effluent toxicity. The acute screening test, in combination with a fixed acute/chronic ratio was found to be nearly equivalent to use of more sensitive short-term chronic test methods in identifying facilities where effluents exhibit potential to cause receiving water impacts. Increasing the frequency of monitoring and expanding the number of species tested is recommended as providing a greater information return on a fixed monitoring investment than routine use of short-term chronic test protocols
