    Cyclic Fatigue Test as a Method for Distinguishing Between Cracking and Non-Cracking Shingles

    A servo-hydraulic fatigue tester attempts to simulate stress cycles that shingles undergo on the roof. The test measures a shingle's resistance to tensile fatigue. Shingle specimens are subjected to a specific load under tension. The tension is released and then brought up to the designated load again. This cycling occurs at a frequency of 10 Hz until the sample breaks. Cyclic fatigue results were definitive in discriminating shingles that performed poorly versus shingles that performed well in service. The results of the testing has provided information on the endurance limit of shingles at an accelerated rate of cyclic tension.
