THIS GROUP OF FORGINGS CONSTITUTES MAINLY the rotor and disk or wheel components used in steam and gas turbines and electrical generators. The integrity of these components is critical because they are generally large, rotate at high speeds, and in the case of steam turbines are confined under high pressure in steam chests. It will be recalled that concern for the safety of turbine and generator rotors spurred the introduction of vacuum degassing in steel making and the development of ultrasonic test methods for the volumetric examination of heavy sections. Ten ASTM forging specifications fall into this category. It should be noted that although these are intended to be stand alone specifications, essential input must be included in the purchase order, not the least of which is a drawing showing the required mechanical test locations.
