Permeability Test Device for Soil with Automatic Water Head Control

CODEN: GTJODJ

Abstract

This paper proposes a constant water head permeability test device for soil with automatic water head control using sensors, actuators, and a microcontroller. A microcontroller controls a solenoid valve based on signals from a water level sensor to sustain a constant water level. The microcontroller also uses a digital scale, a temperature sensor, and a digital time clock to measure the amount of water, water temperature, and time lapse, respectively, during a permeability test. In the permeability tests for Jumunjin sand and Gwanak weathered soil that were performed in this study, the test device sustained a constant water level, minimizing the wastage of water. The permeability coefficients determined using the developed device were practically identical to the permeability coefficients obtained from the conventional method and had good agreement with the predicted values from previous studies. This study is also expected to well showcase the improvement and automation of the conventional geotechnical experiments using the microcontroller.
