Revision of D4176-20 Standard Test Method for Free Water and Particulate Contamination in Distillate Fuels (Visual Inspection Procedures)

Rationale

Reference to Terminology Standard is missing in applicable section. The current definition for free water is defined slightly different in several ASTM standards as shown below: free water, n-water in excess of that soluble in the fuel at the temperature of the test and appearing in the fuel as a haze, cloudiness, droplets, or water layer. D4860 DISCUSSIONNote that when there is a water layer in a biodiesel fuel blend, there can be water-soluble components present in the free water. D2709 free water, n-water in excess of that soluble in the fuel at the temperature of the test, and appearing in the fuel as a haze or cloudiness, or as droplets. D4176 free water, n-water in excess of that soluble in the sample and appearing in the sample as a haze or cloudiness, as droplets, or as a separated phase or layer. D156 free water, n-nwater that exists as a separate phase. D4057 DISCUSSIONWater present in fuel such as hydrocarbon diesel fuel that can be present as suspended haze, nonvisible suspended water droplets, as droplets on the walls of the vessel, or as a separate layer on the bottom of the vessel or sample container. D7463 The intent of this ballot is to agree on a harmonized definition of free water that can then be balloted into other sub D02.14 or D02.05 standards. Similarly, the definition of Clear and bright is defined differently in several ASTM standards: clear-and-bright, n-condition in which the sample is free of haze or cloudiness. (Also termed clean-and-bright.) D156 clear-and-bright (also termed clean-and-bright), n-a condition in which the fuel contains no visible water drops or particulates and is free of haze or cloudiness. D4860 clear-and-bright (also termed clean-and-bright), n-a condition in which the fuel is free of haze or cloudiness. D4176 The intent of this ballot is to agree on a harmonized definition of clear and bright that can then be balloted into other sub D02.14 or D02.05 standards.
