New Specification for Ambient Air Quality Sensors and Other Sensor-based Instruments

1. Scope

This specification establishes performance criteria for ambient air quality sensors and sensor-based instruments based on the evaluation practice described in WK64899.

Keywords

criteria pollutants, evaluation, community monitoring, fenceline, wild fires.:

Rationale

Both public and air monitoring stakeholders have interest in collection of enhanced regional, local, and fenceline ambient air quality information. This has manifested itself as a driving force in the deployment of low cost sensors and instruments to measure ambient air quality in communities, schools, during wild-fire episodes, around industrial facilities and elsewhere. Users of sensor technologies require information on the performance and limitations of these devices so that informed decisions regarding their suitability and selection for a particular purpose can be made as well as providing critical information to decision makers . This specification defines performance criteria so that users can make informed decision based upon sensor data of known quality and limitations. It is anticipated that the main users of this specification will be manufacturers, developers and distributors of outdoor air quality monitors, air quality agencies, fire departments, and environmental consultants. The specification is likely to be referenced in standards and codes that address the minimum measurement performance for community based ambient air monitoring.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
