ASTM WK74049

    Revision of A795 / A795M - 13(2020) Standard Specification for Black and Hot-Dipped Zinc-Coated (Galvanized) Welded and Seamless Steel Pipe for Fire Protection Use

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: A795 / A795M - 21

    Developed by Subcommittee: A01.09 | Committee A01 | Contact Staff Manager

    black steel pipe; seamless steel pipe; steel pipe; welded steel pipe; zinc coated steel pipe;;

    Add an additional sentence to section 11.1, to read: The galvanized pipe shall be free from uncoated areas, blisters, flux deposits, and gross dross inclusions. Lumps, projections, globules, or heavy deposits of zinc which will interfere with the intended use of the material will not be permitted. The justification is that pipe dipped in tanks with poor maintenance may leave an environment after batch dipping where holidays are present due to ash, dross, or foreign debris attaching to the pipe. This condition can contribute to the micro corrosion cells leading to through wall penetration and premature failure. This condition is found mainly in sprinkler piping, for which ASTM A795 piping is used.
