ASTM WK73746

    Revision of D2649 - 04(2014) Standard Test Method for Corrosion Characteristics of Solid Film Lubricants

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: D2649 - 20a

    Developed by Subcommittee: D02.L0.05 | Committee D02 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK73746

    Keywords

    aluminum alloy; corrosion characteristics; solid film lubricant;

    Rationale

    Harmonization of definition of lubricant. Different definitions for lubricant that appear in six standards under D02.L0s jurisdiction: StandardLubricant Definition D2511lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces that reduces the friction or wear between them (see Terminology D4175). D2649lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces that reduces the friction or wear between them (see Test Method D4175). D4172lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces for the purpose of reducing the friction or wear, or both, between them. D7421lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces that reduces the friction or wear, or both between them. D8227lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces that reduces the friction or wear between them. D8316lubricant, n any material interposed between two surfaces for the purpose of reducing the friction or wear, or both, between them. The definitions differ primarily in two respects. 1.Some use the word that and others use for the purpose of. The latter phrase excludes materials that have incidental lubricant functionality i.e., would exclude corrosion inhibitors and other materials that have non-lubricant, intended properties, but which also reduce friction, wear, or both. 2.Some include the phrase or both. By D02 convention, without this phrase, the definition excludes materials that reduce both friction and wear. Consequently, the proposed, harmonized definition quoted from D7421 uses the word that and includes the phrase or both. This is one of five linked ballot items for the purpose of harmonizing the lubricant definition among all standards under D02.L0s jurisdiction. The proposed definition has also been shared with Subcommittees D02.B09, D02.C14, D02.F17, and D02.G02 with the recommendation that they also adopt it so that all D02 standards with terminology sections that include lubricant use the harmonized version. The proposed, harmonized definition reflects agreement among members of Subcommittee D02.95 on Terminology but is not the result of an effort to reach full Subcommittee consensus.
