New Guide for the Support Waste from Lysimeter Testing

1. Scope

This standard guide will recommend specific test methodologies, protocols, and conditions to support waste form lysimeter testing applications in support of C1174 disposal site service condition and performance assessment model confirmation. Performing experiments in field lysimeters is one of the best ways of confirming that laboratory experiments provide reasonable model parameter estimates. Field lysimeters are also useful in demonstrating that release models can accurately predict material degradation in a disposal site environment. Many lysimeter studies and other field tests have been used in the past to measure the extent and rates of contaminant releases from different waste forms under field-relevant conditions. Lysimeter waste form tests provide a unique set of data that can then be used in modeling efforts to predict contaminant mobility at larger scales in the near-field environment. Experience and lessons learned from past and current lysimeter waste forms testing will be codified into this guide.
