ASTM WK73362

    Revision of D4177 - 16e1 Standard Practice for Automatic Sampling of Petroleum and Petroleum Products

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Active Standard: D4177 - 16e1

    Developed by Subcommittee: D02.02 | Committee D02 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK73362

    Keywords

    acceptance tests; automatic petroleum sampling; controllers; extractor; intermediate sampling container; isokinetic sampling; mixing elements; portable samplers; primary sample container; probe; representative sampling; representative sampling criteria; slip stream sample loop; sample mixing; sampling handling; stream conditioning;;

    Rationale

    The current standard requires that 7 Performance Monitoring Criteria be reported. Each has an acceptable criteria, and if any of them fall outside the specified range then the sample is rejected. Collectively, the criteria are causing automatic sampler results with low uncertainty to be rejected and for vessel sample results with higher uncertainty to be used instead. To remedy, the batch set-up calculations (Section 14) and the sampler performance calculations (Section 18.7) were streamlined, and the pass/fail criteria was modified to allow multiple means to pass (Figure 14). An accompanying spreadsheet was created to demonstrate the calculations (Annex X3). Useful, but unnecessary, performance criteria were relocated as additional diagnostics (Annex X4).
