ASTM WK73254

    New Guide for Evaluating Lateral Stability of Cavity Wall Ties in the Field

    (What is a Work Item?)

    Developed by Subcommittee: E06.55 | Committee E06 | Contact Staff Manager

    WK73254

    1. Scope

    The proposed scope involves four distinct actions to arrive at a conclusion of whether or not wall ties of the cavity wall facade are sufficient to maintain lateral stability of the exterior veneer. The actions required include review of past performance, review of code requirements during original construction, assessing distribution of wall ties through non-destructive testing, and proof-load testing.

    Keywords

    masonry veneer; brick; concrete masonry units;

    Rationale

    NYC DOB passed a rule requiring all cavity wall facades to be probed every ten years to confirm the existence of adequate wall ties. The rule does not provide guidance on how one determines adequacy. In addition, the call for probes may result in some architect/engineers to call for relatively large probe opening (such as 2 sq.ft.). The proposed standard provides guidance as well as a field test method that limits opening to 0.5" diameter so that one may arrive at a conclusion regarding adequacy.

    The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
