    Defines the method to determine the thickness of surface oxide films on copper rod used for electrical purposes

    Rationale

    Even though this test is mandatory to comply with B49 specification for Copper Rod for Electrical Purposes, currently there is no ASTM standard describing how the measurement of the oxide layer thickness on the copper rod should be conducted . Recently the method has been tested by several laboratories and a Precision and Bias statement has been issued. The test method will be primarily used by the producers of the copper rod for electrical purposes to measure the thickness of the copper oxide layer on the rod surface, making sure the rod is compliant with the B49 requirements. The method can be also successfully used to evaluate at some extent the amount of copper oxides in the subsurface of a copper rod that has been submitted to a torsion (twist) test.
