New Specification for High Strength Steel Bars for Pre-Stressed Concrete that are not Cold Stressed and Stress Relieved

1. Scope

This specification covers Type I and Type II high-strength steel bars intended for use in prestressed concrete construction or in prestressed ground anchors that are manufactured differently than those conforming to ASTM A722. Type I bars have threaded ends for coupling bars and anchorage, and a plain surface between the threads. Type II bars are continuously threaded along their entire length. Bars are of a minimum tensile strength level of 150 000 psi [1035 MPa].

Keywords

A722; High Strength Steel Bars; Pre-Stressed Concrete; Cold Stressed and Stress Relieved

Rationale

Currently, ASTM A722 covers high strength steel bars for pre-stressed concrete, and requires the specific process of cold stressing and stress relieving to meet the prescribed mechanical properties in the spec. Suppliers have been using alternative methods to supply such bars so a new spec is required.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
