    Rationale

    Certain test wall types, in particular walls comprised of glass which does not have mineral fiber board insulation on its interior face, are prone to breaking during E2307 fire test. That breakage can lead to excessive heat loss from the Test Room causing the temperature to drop below the allowed range. Increasing the glass flow input to compensate is limited to only 1.30 time the gas flow required during the 25:00 to 30:00 time period (section 12.7.2.2). A fix was discussed at the June 2018 task group meeting in San Diego, CA during which Herb Stansberry (Intertek) presented the results of Interteks most recent research & development testing utilizing a baffle above the window in the test wall. The function of the baffle is to keep the area above the window opening and below the bottom edge of the spandrel intact so that breakage and ensuing excessive heat losses are avoided. This assists the test laboratories by keeping the Test Room conditions within range, and it standardizes the fire exposure at the Perimeter Fire Barrier by preserving the shape of the plume leaving the Test Room. Additional test data was shared at the June 2019 task group meeting in Denver, CO to further support the addition of the baffle. The task group then spent the remaining time at the June 2019 meeting as well as at the December 2019 meeting developing language to describe the baffle.
