    Rationale

In reporting results for shear bond, it is required to report where the failure occurred. Currently the options are in the unit itself, between the specimen and the bond coat, between the bond coat and the mortar setting bed, or in the setting bed itself. When performing the test in accordance with ASTM C1670, a mortar substrate is prepared (as detailed in ASTM C482) and the unit is adhered using a bond coat. In the nomenclature of the reporting section, the mortar substrate is referred to as the mortar setting bed (in Section 12.1.5.2. This can be confusing because in actual installation, the mortar setting bed is the mortar used to adhere the stone to the scratch coat or other substrate. To reduce confusion, it is proposed to change setting bed to mortar substrate in the reporting section of C1670.
