    Rationale

    There is demand from users to order A572 Grade 60 and Grade 65 plates in thicknesses beyond the current thickness limitations for these grades (1-1/4). Additionally, some manufacturers of construction equipment have developed proprietary specifications for 65 ksi specified minimum yield strength plates in order to purchase these plates in thicknesses up to 2.36. An A01.02 Subcommittee Task Group has reviewed production data from a plate producer which demonstrated the capability to achieve Grade 60 tensile properties in plates up to 2-1/2 thick and Grade 65 tensile properties in plates in thicknesses up to at least 2. Accordingly, this Task Group has recommended A572 be revised to increase the maximum thickness for plates and bars for Grade 60 from 1-1/4 to 2-1/2 and to increase the maximum thickness for plates and bars for Grade 65 from 1-1/4 to 2. Additionally, to maintain a logical progression of maximum thickness for plates and bars as function of yield strength, it was recommended to increase the maximum thickness for plates and bars for Grade 55 from 2 to 2-1/2.
