This practice outlines procedures for the petrographic examination of hardened concrete and other cement-based construction materials. The materials may be from construction elements, pre-fabricated products or portions thereof, or test specimens exposed to natural environments, simulated service conditions or laboratory tests. The practice applies to materials created with hydraulic cement or other cement-based binder, and employs the use of varied microscopic techniques and supplementary analytical tools for the mineralogical and microstructural characterization of the material components.

The rationale for this ballot is to modernize completely the existing standard practice for petrographic examination of hardened concrete by re-organizing and re-formatting the existing, dated standard (ASTM C856) and merging practices and procedures for optical and electron microscopy (ASTM C1723) into a single cohesive document.
