New Practice for Standard Practice for the On-Site Inspection of Installed Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials

1. Scope

This Practice provides a standard set of guidelines for conducting and reporting on inspections of installed Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials (SFRMs) applied to structural steel or other substrates. This Practice establishes procedures to inspect products and systems, including methods for field verification and inspection. This Practice addresses all types of Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials applied to structural steel and other substrates. This Practice provides an inspector, employed by an inspection agency, various methods to verify that required Spray-Applied Fire Resistive Materials and Coatings have been installed to the tested and listed system and manufacturers installation instructions in addition to project requirements.

Rationale

Currently, there is no document that has been produced in the industry that is a consensus of the fireproofing industry manufacturers and contractors. The ASTM Standard proposed creates that key document that has been developed by manufacturers, contractors AND those inspection agencies that provide fireproofing inspections. ASTMs new document will provide in mandatory code acceptable language the method to inspect SFRM Fireproofing Systems. Architects will specify this standard as the inspections are mandated by Chapter 17 of the International Building Code.

The title and scope are in draft form and are under development within this ASTM Committee.
