    Rationale

    A. Vent holes for multi-layered handrails Revise existing recommendations for vent and drain holes to include recommended hole designs for fabricated pipework designs such as handrail containing five or more parallel components to prevent floating of the parts while in the galvanizing bath. B. Updated clearance hole recommendations ANSI/AISC 360 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (2016) and AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications (8th Edition) include revised standard hole sizes (db + 1/8 inch) for nominal bolt sizes 1 inch and over. Clearance holes sized db + 1/8 inch are suitable to provide a clearance hole that will accommodate a galvanized bolt without the need of extra hole cleaning. Per the revised hole dimensions, this change will make the recommendation that oversized holes are no longer required for slip-critical connections involving bolts sized 1 inch or greater since the standard hole is already sized db +1/8 inch. For connections where the specified bolt size is less than 1 inch, clearance holes shall be oversized an additional 1/16 inch to achieve a clearance hole size of db +1/8 inch.
