ASTM C1634 is intended to apply to concrete masonry units that are used in facing applications, typically anchored veneers. Further, the units are limited to a maximum width of four inches, and a weight that will typically permit it to be lifted and placed with one had. In recent years, many new products have been introduced in to the marketplace that are intended for similar facing applications. While such units still meet the dimensional requirements listed above, they do not have a shape that is associated with a brick. Because of this, there has been some reluctance from architects and designers to apply ASTM C1634 to these innovative units, despite the standard being the most appropriate one. This ballot proposes to change the title and naming of these units from Concrete Facing Brick to Concrete Masonry Facing Units to better encompass units used for veneer facing applications. This change only affects the title and name of units. No changes are proposed to physical property requirements at this time.
